Today, please allow me to have a talk about my style.
In my last blog post, Joyce commented, “I think you copy Pacific and Atlantic style. Better be yourself.” And Tania responded to that as below:
I have been following your blog for years but never felt motivated or a need to comment until now. Evertybody has a style that is unique to them. We also draw inspiration from everywhere. In recent times inspiration is being found on blogs. This is what they are designed to do. Sometimes my outfits look like I copied Hallie, other times they look like something Blair would have coordinated and at other times they look like Annablle Fleur or Wendy. Sometimes it is coincidence, sometimes I have been inspired or even just reminded of an item that’s been sitting in my closet that would be good to wear again. I haven’t always loved what Hallie has worn anymore than I have not always loved what any other fashion blogger wears (I must say these occassions are very rare), but that’s purely because if I did then we wouln’t all be unique. I think Hallie and Blair are both Fashion leaders in their own right and if they copy each other, or gain inspiration from one another once in a while, then that makes them true fashion masters because every great person in their field is not afraid to learn from others or recognize that others can add value too. So let’s all rejoice in the fact that we all have something in common- “we spend far too much of our time thinking about clothes” -we know it and we love it!, rather than placing ownership on ways of coordinating clothes.
The truth is, sometimes, I do worry that people think I copy somebody else style whenever I felt one of my outfit reminds me of somebody else. I even decided not to post a few of them, and returned some items after I saw other bloggers wearing the same things. More and more after that, I realized, that’s not real or necessary, because for some similar style bloggers, it happens very often we all buy the same or similar items and style it in a similar ways. (After all, unless you have your clothes custom-made, there are only so many different things to choose from!) Plus, right now the internet and all kind of apps make inspirations so easy to get from everywhere. Believe it not, I am not upset when hearing people say I am copy somebody else’s style. It’s like learning art and drawing, singing, and even when I was practice calligraphy when I was little girl, I used tracing paper on top of the good sample, and wrote in a exact way (or you can call it “copy”), and a bit later, I learned how to develop my own soft pen style, which was very good. Same thing as in clothing style, I think. And maybe almost everything else in life.
So, thanks to all of you great stylists who have inspired the development of my own style and taste. And I hope my style inspires some of you, too!

First off… you certainly have individual style… secondly I agree with you, 99.999999% of what is blogged is not couture, was not made specifically for one person so everyone has a right to purchase and style it as they see fit…. if it is reminiscent of someone else… that is mostly because they are seeing the item not the whole ensemble… take the Zara origami skort from a couple years ago… every blogger was in that skirt…. for me?… I stayed away, not because everyone was wearing it, but because it just was not ‘me’…. so every blogger that wore the skort was copying each other?…. there are some similarities with some outfits especially if it is a trend piece…. that’s just the reality. I think its unfair for someone to make such a harsh judgement on you… especially when, from my perspective it is so far from the truth.x

I totally understand this as a blogger myself. I don’t necessarily worry that I look “copied” but I do draw a lit of inspiration from other bloggers and street style. It’s hard not to look at least similar. But your style is your style and many others can have a similar style. There are always subtleties that make each blogger unique and keeps the readers coming back.
I totally agree with what Tania said. Fashion is the way it is because it finds inspiration in everything. Yes, fashion is every evolving and changes every season, but the beauty of style is incorporating things into our wardrobe that fits what we like. I do believe that every piece that you choose to blog about fits exactly what you like, otherwise you wouldn’t post it. People are entitled to their own opinion. Unless if you’re Lady Gaga, I don’t think we need to constantly prove that we’re different. I love your style Hallie. It has a mix of modern and vintage feminism. You always incorporate classic flattering silhouettes and you never amaze me with your style. Keep it up and don’t let the haters get to you.

Well said, Hallie. I think most of us understand that it’s perfectly fine and natural to be inspired by other people, in many creative endeavours. It’s how we find our own style. I spent most of my teens trying to sing like Christina Aguilera or Marian Carey before I discovered my own sound. The same goes for fashion – it took me years of trying to replicate the exact outfits of my idols (on an after-school job budget) before I learned to choose things I actually like and style them in my own way.
We should never stop learning and being inspired. And one of the most important things I ever learned was,”If you have nothing nice to say, don’t say anything at all.” Perhaps there are some others who should think about that …
Love the skirt, it´s beautiful!

Hallie, we love your style. Do not bother what others said to you. We are always here to support you!
Your style is so unique and special, your way of combining colors and materials is exquisite and timeless, something that one cannot simply copy from somebody else, because it is a matter or personal inspiration and instinct. There is one thing to wear similar or the same pieces of clothing with someone else-which is totally normal and expected- and a totally different thing to copy their style. And yours is just incredible <3
Hallie, I never felt you copy any other people’s style. You have your own style, which I really love. It’s because great minds think a like, Keep you with your great work. I love it:) <3 xoxo

I totally agree with shalwesasa.com that you never copy other people’s style. I also read other blogs like blair, wendy, jean, nicole, peony etc and so far i never see any resemblance of your style and theirs. i really don’t understand why she has to say that you copy others.
i definitely think you have your own style and you put things together in unique ways……. especially in love with how you have styled this dainty skirt with the tee and fierce heels. keep doing you :))
brooke @ tigers don’t lose sleep
Whoever said that you copy is an idiot! If anyone copying anyone it should be Annabelle copying Blair. Those two dress too smiliarily too many times.
You have a completely different body type than Annabelle and Blair. Even if you want to copy, it’s not going to be too successful. You and Wendy are more similar in size but I like your style much, much better than Wendy’s. She’s too deliberately. It’s almost like she’s trying too hard to be too polished, sorely missing the fun element. Your style to me is more enjoyable to watch.
Regardless, you do have your own sense of style. Fashion blogging is intensely competitive. Those whithout a niche will not stand out. You stand out therefore you have “something”.
Keeping doing what you do best and don’t worry about groundless noise.
To be honest as person that just started there own fashion blog. Some of the biggest names in fashion blogging that I adore and still follow today almost all own the same thing or love the same pieces. And that to me is because of one thing, these ladies all adore fashion. They have a great sense of style and all know what they love. So to me I don’t care if they all have the same piece or if they all wear them but its how they style it. So for people to say there “copying” is just someone saying “you have influenced me enough to try what your trying”. SO COPY AWAY LADIES!!

Firstly, well said.. I am rubbish at commenting on others blogs and feel this is something I need to do more of but I do follow your blog and have never once thought that you copy other people. Obviously I have my own blog and go through similar things and have often returned items too because another blogger has got there before me with a similar look. There are thousands and thousands of bloggers out there these days and not as many outfits.. Why are people so quick to always jump on the negative?
Anyway, loving this look, the skirt is beautiful

Love the way you responded to the comment. Like you said, we all buy similar and same items from the same shops and the are not custom made to individuals. Most of the items can be easily paired in the same way and each blogger adds their own unique touch to the items.
Life is full of inspiration and we are always learning and inspriring. Keep doing what you are doing.

That’s the reason why I like following you and inspired by you. You’re not good in styling but you’re tough and you’re full of confidence too. The confidence is that one thing that make everything stands out. Which includes the way you carry your apparels. Everything you said was spot on! Internet makes everything so easy and we all have our own inspiration and we try to make things better in our own way or ways that suit us. Don’t ever stop learning.
P.S. That skirt looks like a Burberry inspired =D
