Our house is 70 years old, and made of concrete blocks, including most of the interior walls.  It’s built like a fort, really, and that means it is almost impossible to remove walls and redesign the structure for a more modern, open flow.  But the walls are very good in other ways: the house is exceptionally strong, and has gone through three major California earthquakes, and countless minor ones, with no damage at all.  And the thick, concrete walls provide great insulation, so we rarely need heat in the winter or air-conditioning even in the hot Los Angeles summers — in fact, we have not turned on the AC once this summer because of that insulation effect.

With these solid walls, instead of trying to make each bathroom bigger and move or remove walls, we kept the same size but renovated with all-new materials and style.  We like a country-modern mixed style.

The skylight is one of the major highlights we added in this room; the room itself doesn’t have any window, so my husband and I decided to add a skylight to brighten the room.  It turned out to be a brilliant idea, if I say so myself, because the skylight not only saves us some on the electric bill, but it adds a lot of personality inside the room, too.

[/column-group]In our ongoing renovation plan, we will totally makeover three bathrooms — this is the second one we did.  On the first one, we were really learning, and discussed all the design decisions, so it was a team effort.  This second one my hubby and I agreed was mine to design alone, so it’s the result of my personal style.  I like patterns and I like colors, so when choosing all the accessories for the bathroom, I chose a lot of fun and lovely accessories, like the Treetop Shower Curtain.  The Coral Natasha Printed Towel is my favorite, it’s so me and so soft!

As with all the other newly finished and painted rooms, this new bathroom still had some lingering paint smell (and I have the most sensitive nose in our family, so I really notice it), so I use a lot of natural scents inside the bathroom, like a Scented Jar Candle & some Mediterranean Sea Potpourri.

Oh, Red Bear likes to add some fun toys inside the room, and likes to play with them when sitting in the Jacuzzi bathtub.  The funny part is, with the new bathroom he really enjoys washing his hands, too, more than ever — pretty good for a 7-year old boy!  He told me he like that “pink bottle soap” (Beneath the Trees Lavender Hand Soap) because “it smells so good!” My husband and I agree!

So, in general, this is not a major luxury make-over bathroom, but we love it, and it’s full of love and happiness and so much fresher and prettier than it was.

There are many more home re-modeling projects on the way, and I will share them with you as we progress later.

This post is in partnership with World Market, a store I love!  I get all sorts of inspirations there, and so many pretty and unusual items.  All opinions here in this post are my own, however. Thank you for supporting the affiliate posts who make this blog possible.

P.S. A friendly reminder, The Bath Event is going on at World Market right now, check them out here.

  1. Small spaces are very tricky to design and decorate specially bathrooms. It was so interesting for me to see your taste in decorating Hallie. Hope you enjoy your new bathroom.
