East Coast Family Road Trip with The Ritz-Carlton (Part 2. New York, Central Park)

Today we continue with the story of our second stop on our East Coast road trip, New York City, at The Ritz-Carlton Central Park.

1. New York City

As everyone knows, there is just so much to do and see in New York City, sometimes called “the city that never sleeps.” My big reason for going there at that particular time, though, was to attend a fashion event, a brunch and celebration of a collaboration between The Ritz-Carlton and Saks 5th Avenue, which was opening amazing new window displays at its flagship store. I was excited!

Of course, NYC offers so many other things, too, like Broadway shows, museums, Central Park, all the different ethnic neighborhoods, and all the skyscrapers. Two days is barely enough to get started seeing these things, but it was enough to give Red Bear a feel of the city’s energy and excitement. As he summed it up, “New York is a city of energy and yellow taxis!”

What We Did In New York

As I said, my own big reason to visit New York on the days we did was to attend the Saks 5th Avenue / Ritz-Carlton brunch and to see the window displays. We fashion bloggers had a fancy brunch in the Saks restaurant (it was great!), and I took the chance to catch up with blogger friends who were there, and meet some new ones – always fun! By the way, these window displays will be there for the rest of July, so if you are in NYC during that time, you definitely should go check them out for yourself! Hurry up!

About The Ritz-Carlton Central Park

This gorgeous hotel is located directly across the street from Central Park, between Sixth Avenue and Fifth Avenue – a really swanky (and convenient) location! It was built as the St. Moritz Hotel in 1930, and became part of The Ritz-Carlton family in 1999; they extensively renovated the building to create modern luxury rooms, but maintained the grandeur and elegance of the original building. I love the feel of the place, and could just keep exploring it; everything looks so rich and elegant.

Our room faced directly onto Central Park from the 17th floor, so we had an amazing view. There were even 2 telescopes in the suite, and we all enjoyed looking around the park with them. I had always wanted to stay here during Fashion Week, but never got a chance to do it before, because it books up so fast!

Our Ritz-Carlton “home” in New York was just across the street from Central Park — I like it when we can walk to the park whenever we want, and it’s so nice just to cross the noisy street and escape to a fresh, quiet paradise with just a couple minutes of walking.

If we had more time, we would have liked to do other tourist things, since it was Red Bear’s first time in New York. But we’ll be back, and then we’ll check out the Statue of Liberty, some big skyscrapers, like the Empire State Building, and some art museums.

Not only was our suite wonderful – two bedrooms, two full bathrooms – but the service here deserves special mention, it was so warm and personable. And they made a unique gift for us, based on our road trip theme – it was a little “New York skyline” mostly from chocolate, including skyscrapers, and even a yellow chocolate taxicab! We all loved it, especially Red Bear, who started eating it! (By the way, two weeks later he is still working on what is left of it, bite by bite.)

The hotel has many amenities, like the Club Lounge, La Prairie Spa, and a fitness center. Sadly, I didn’t have free time for the spa or fitness center, but once again, we really enjoyed the Club Lounge . . . almost continuously!

Dining in New York

Of course, New York is famous for its great restaurants of every imaginable kind, and it deserves that fame.

But our time was tight, I had fashion things to do and friends to visit, and we mostly stayed in and near The Ritz-Carlton Central Park.

The hotel has a nice, modern lounge restaurant called Contour, decorated very artistically. It offers a selection of breakfast dishes that was just right for us, with an egg white veggie frittata for me, roasted potatoes for my husband, and fresh fruit and croissant for Red Bear. I have to mention, they serve “La Colombe” coffee, which my husband and I both love . . . so delicious!

After two nights with The Ritz-Carlton Central Park, we headed south toward our third stop on our road trip, Philadelphia. Along the way, we made another stop at another historic place, the Trenton Battle Monument in Trenton, New Jersey. It commemorates another Revolutionary War battle, which was captured dramatically by the famous painting of “Washington Crossing the Delaware.” The history of that battle is that, after George Washington and his army were driven out of New York City, and were pursued by British and German units, and lucky to escape. But early on the morning after Christmas, 1776, the little American army suddenly turned, and surprised and captured a German army. It was a crucial victory for American morale, and it meant a lot to Red Bear and my husband to visit there.

Next up: Part 3, The Ritz-Carlton Philadelphia

Big thanks to The Ritz-Carlton for working with us on this story; as always, all opinions are honestly our own.
