After many years blogging, taking photos every day, everywhere, and anytime has become a part of my life.

Most photos that are posted in my blog and social media were a collaboration of my husband and me. My husband takes the pictures, and I pick the ones to publish and edit them. For many years, we wanted the pictures to look (almost) exactly the same as the scene in real life, what my husband calls “pictorialism.” But then I started to play with all of kinds of apps, filters, any and all the popular names you think of. About 2 years ago we just started to shot in Raw instead of jpeg format — bigger files, but better to edit. And I started to edit my photos with the Lightroom .

Changing the background color to fit my outfit (mostly a plain white wall) is one thing I am into lately. I love colors and patterns, as you can tell, and I discovered that changing the background (white wall) color in these pictures makes a big difference. The pictures with a green wall looks so fresh and vibrant and fun, compared to the pictures with just the simple white wall. Now that I have learned how to do it, I believe modifying the background color will be a useful, handy tool to improve my photos.

In today’s post, I don’t want to do a whole tutorial about how to change the background color, but I want to give you a hint by telling what works for me.

1. I haven’t found any mobile apps that can easily change backgrounds that works for me. Yes, I tried many, and the result is not good enough for my eyes. (If you know an app that works well for you, would you please let me know?)

2. Photoshop, that’s it. I subscribe to Lightroom CC, which costs $ per month to store, share, and edit my pictures. If you are working in this field, I think it’s totally worth it. So I add the Photoshop into my monthly plan. They offer many plans, just go find one that fits your need.

3. I am a very, very new beginner in Photoshop. I knew nothing about it before, and I watched this video a couple times, practicing at the same time, and I DID it! We got to thank to all the wonderful sharing from the internet. All I needed to do was spend some time (a little less than an hour) and focus my mind and practice what I learned.

Let me know what do you think about this post? Do you want to hear about how do I take/edit my photos in our future posts?
